About ESECS

Escola Superior de Educação de Leiria (ESE), of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPLeiria) is the oldest public Higher Education establishment in the district. Formally created in 1979, as an autonomous school, it began its teaching activities in 1985/86. In April 1987 it was integrated into IPLeiria.


Initially focused on training basic education teachers and early childhood educators, ESECS expanded its range of offerings to Social Sciences.


Courses such as Human Relations and Communication at Work (RHCT), today Human Relations and Organizational Communication (RHCO), Tourism, Social Service, Social Communication and Multimedia Education (currently C&M), Social Education, Cultural Entertainment, Sports and Wellbeing or Translation and Interpreting in Portuguese-Chinese/Chinese-Portuguese filled gaps in higher education in the region, complementing the institution's traditional areas.


In addition to initial training, ESECS offers, in the area of ​​social sciences, master's degrees oriented towards social intervention, social communication and the deepening of studies in specific areas such as translation and sport and, in the area of ​​education, master's courses aimed at to teachers already in office and other education professionals, aimed at streamlining the educational process.


Today, ESECS welcomes around 3000 students in its technological specialization courses, bachelor's degree, postgraduate degree, master's degree, specialized and professional training, and training for seniors. This diversity guarantees an academic environment rich in experiences and perspectives.
Located in Leiria, in the geographic center of Portugal, it is just 130 km from Lisbon and an hour and a half drive from Porto. ESECS is an excellent option for anyone, national or foreign, who wants to study at a school with high teaching quality standards, pleasant facilities, adequate social support and located in a region of contrasts and unique natural beauty.


ESECS is today a landmark in the Region and, along with the remaining four Schools, contributes to consolidating IPLeiria as a reference institution in the country.


About CICS.NOVA.IPLeiria

The Leiria Branch of CICS.NOVA is based at the School of Education and Social Sciences of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. It has been active at this Institute since 2002, when the Center for Research on Identity(ies) and Diversity(ies) was formed, whose researchers moved to the Leiria branch of CICS.NOVA in 2015. Following its founding matrix, the Leiria Hub is committed to developing research in a diverse range of social science areas, in particular on social trajectories, intercultural mediation, migration, heritage, tourism and identities. These are interdisciplinary areas, as is the general project of CICS.NOVA.
